City of Cape Town launched fifth and largest Safe Space in Green Point

The City of Cape Town launched its fifth and largest Safe Space in Green Point. The 300-bed shelter comes in the midst of a cold snap being experienced in Cape Town, which has been lashed by severe winter rains. The shelter in Ebenezer Road was officially opened by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, describing homelessness as one of the biggest social issues we face on a global scale. He says: “it starts with offering a dignified place to get off the streets to get back to productive work and back into society.” Radio 786 broadcasted live from the shelter, which, amongst other things, offers: ▪ dignified shelter▪ comfort and ablutions▪ two meals per day▪ access to a social worker on-site + personal development planning▪ various social services, including ID Book and social grant assistance▪ family reunification services▪ access to substance and alcohol abuse treatment▪ skills training +job finding and EPWP placement consideration
