The Hammanskraal cholera outbreak must be treated as a national emergency, as well as a humanitarian and human rights crisis. This is the call from the Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink, who was also chased away from the area yesterday. Angry residents accuse him of only caring about their circumstances now that national government has had to step in. The Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Andile Tshona, says that the tests conducted on the water supplying Hammanskraal are due tomorrow. He says that this will assist in determining what had caused the outbreak. But Senior lecturer at the Department of Community Health at the University of Stellenbosch Dr Jo Barnes says that this is the wrong approach. She says that the crisis is already amongst the population, and there needs to be a focus on preventing the spread of the disease. She was speaking as 15 people have died in the north of Pretoria.
